Sault's Studio Dance Arts brings home top honours

Studio kicked off its 20th anniversary competitive season at Terpsichore Dance Starz Challenge in Milton, Ont., winning award as Senior Grand Champions

The Sault’s Studio Dance Arts recently kicked off its 20th anniversary competitive season at the Terpsichore Dance Starz Challenge in Milton, Ont., April 13 to16.

The local team of 69 competitive dancers aged 6 to 18, along with their families and studio staff, travelled to southern Ontario to compete in one of Canada’s largest competition events.

A total of 14 participating studios from Pickering, Keswick, London, Brampton, Kitchener, Cambridge, Hamilton, Burlington, Toronto, Mississauga, Ottawa and the Sault performed close to 900 routines for a three-judge panel – all vying for top honours.

At the conclusion of the event, the judges gave the nod and named Studio Dance Arts Senior Grand Champions!

Studio Dance Arts brought their full team, including their Novice Company, Mini Company, Junior Company and Intermediate/Senior Companies. SDA routines scored a multitude of “Outstanding” scores (95 average or more), along with many first places in categories.

In addition to those placements, SDA received the following final awards:

OVERALL RESULTS – NOVICE (1st Year Competitive)

  • 2nd Overall / Top Novice / Group-Line-Prod. / TISKET A TASKET (Tap)
  • 3rd Overall / Top Novice / Group-Line-Prod. / LITTLE HEROES (Jazz)

OVERALL RESULTS – PART-TIME (under 6 hours per week of training)

  • 2nd Overall  / Top 12yrs & Under / Group-Line-Prod. / GREEN EGGS & HAM (Jazz)

OVERALL RESULTS – 12yrs & Under FULL-TIME (over 6 hours per week of training)

  • Winner / Top 12yrs & Under / Line / VARSITY (HipHop)
  • Winner / Top 12yrs & Under / Small Group / LE JAZZ HOT (Jazz)
  • 2nd Overall / Top 12yrs & Under / Large Group / STEAM HEAT (Jazz)

TERPSICHORE CONVENTION SCHOLARSHIPS were awarded to Aliyah Flammia and Madeline Hutton.

GRAND AWARDS – These were awarded to the highest scoring routines of the entire competition in each dance style. Studio Dance Arts won three out of the nine categories:

  • Highest Scoring BALLET / SDA Inter-Senior Company / NIGHT AT THE BALLET - 94.42
  • Highest Scoring JAZZ / SDA Inter-Senior Company / BIG TIME - 97.69
  • Highest Scoring CONTEMPORARY / SDA Senior Company / THAT’S LIFE - 97.94

REGIONAL CHAMPIONS – At the end of the event, the highest scoring 12yrs & Under and highest scoring 13yrs & Over routines are awarded the grand prize and named “Grand Champions.”

  • 12yrs & Under / 1st Runner-Up / VARISTY (HipHop) / Avg Score - 96.32
  • 13yrs & Over / CHAMPIONS!  / THAT’S LIFE (Contemporary) / Avg Score - 97.94

Studio Dance Arts is proud to bring the Senior Grand Champions title home to the Sault!

Richard Kim (founder/director) and Tania Castellani-Greco (assistant director), along with the entire SDA faculty are very proud of the dancers hard work, dedication, passion and love for the art of dance. Watching them develop into such beautiful artists and human beings is the biggest prize of all.

Celebrating 20 years of excellence in dance education in Sault Ste. Marie – Studio Dance Arts 20th anniversary year end show takes place at GFL Memorial Gardens on Sunday, June 11. The 1 p.m. show will feature all of their Recreational and Competitive dancers, along with performances from their sister studio from Marquette, Michigan, as well as some former alumni.
