Thunderbirds come from behind to sweep weekend games

A pair of weekend games saw a pair of come-from-behind wins for the Soo Thunderbirds.

On Saturday night, the Thunderbirds rebounded from a 4-2 deficit to beat the Elliot Lake Red Wings 7-4 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Centennial Arena in Elliot Lake.

A natural hat trick by Dayton Clarke in the second period put the Red Wings ahead 4-2 but the Thunderbirds got goals by Andrew Gibson, on the power play, and Samuel Lake 38 seconds apart to send the game into the third tied at four.

From there, the Thunderbirds got goals from Michael Chaffay, Kelsey Ouellet, and Tyson Doucette to pick up the win.

Gibson finished the night with two goals and two assists while Doucette had a goal and a pair of assists for the Thunderbirds.

Connor Healy assisted on three goals for the visitors.

Cooper Foster also had a pair of assists while Kaden Dundas had the other Sault goal.

Thunderbirds goaltender Noah Zeppa made 36 saves.

Josh Tomasi had a goal and an assist for Elliot Lake while Aidan Leblanc and Jovani Moses assisted on two goals each.

Goaltender Colton Donaldson made 26 saves for the Red Wings.

On Friday night, the Thunderbirds got a pair of goals in the third period to force overtime before Dundas potted the overtime winner on the power play in a 4-3 win over the Soo (Mich.) Eagles at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

Chaffay had a goal and two assists to pace the Thunderbirds offensively in Friday’s win while Dundas had a goal and an assist.

Gibson and Kyle Trottier had the other Thunderbirds goals.

Zeppa made 22 saves.

Chase Tallaire, Jack Mortson, and Zachary Briskey scored for the Eagles.

Trevor Davis assisted on a pair of goals and goaltender Gabe Rosek stopped 24 shots.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Oct. 16 on the road against the Espanola Express before returning home the following night to face the Eagles.
