Thunderbirds pick up weekend split

A pair of goals 49 seconds apart in the second period turned into the difference as the Soo Thunderbirds dropped a 3-0 Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League decision to the Soo (Mich.) Eagles on Sunday afternoon at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

Chase Tallaire broke a scoreless tie at 6:02 of the second period when he beat Thunderbirds starter Noah Zeppa with a shot from the left circle high glove side to get the Eagles on the board.

Nicholas Castillo gave the Eagles some added breathing room when he scored from the top of the left circle off a faceoff win by Jacob Swiatek to make it 2-0 at 6:51.

Seth Ferguson capped off the scoring 5:37 into the third period when he beat Zeppa from the high slot through a Thunderbirds defender.

Eagles goaltender Ryan Gilmore made 39 saves for the shutout, including 19 saves in the opening period.

Zeppa made 12 saves for the Thunderbirds.

The game was the second in less than 24 hours for the Thunderbirds after the team beat the Espanola Express 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night in Espanola.

Tyson Doucette scored on the power play at 1:25 of overtime to lift the Thunderbirds to the victory.

Doucette, who scored with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation time to tie the game at two, had a pair of power play goals in the win.

Kelsey Ouellet had the other goal for the Thunderbirds.

Noah Metivier made 26 saves for the Thunderbirds against the Express.

Espanola goaltender Patrick Boivin made 43 saves in the loss.

Kyle Caron and Kobe Braham completed the scoring for the Express.

The Thunderbirds return to action on Wednesday night at home against the Elliot Lake Red Wings. Puck drop at the John Rhodes Community Centre is set for 7 p.m.
