The Soo Thunderbirds had their five-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night.

Elliot Lake Red Wings goaltender Cameron Smith was perfect between the pipes as the Red Wings blanked the Thunderbirds 1-0 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the John Rhodes Community Centre.

A goal by Thomas Dimoulas midway through the opening period was the difference offensively for the visitors.

Dimoulas took a shot from the left circle that beat Thunderbirds goaltender Kolton Bourret glove side after Red Wings centre Kaden Laverdiere won a faceoff to the left of the Thunderbirds goal.

Bourret made 22 saves for the Thunderbirds in the loss.

For the Red Wings, Smith made 30 saves, including 22 over the final two periods in which Elliot Lake was outshot by a 22-10 margin.

With the loss, the Thunderbirds fall to 9-7-0-1 and sit in third in the NOJHL’s West Division.

Meanwhile, Elliot Lake improves to 8-8-0-0 with the win and sits fifth in the division, moving two points ahead of the Soo (Mich.) Eagles.

The Thunderbirds and Red Wings are set to meet again later this week as the clubs face off on Friday night at Centennial Arena in Elliot Lake.
