A provincial track and field meet organized by the Legion is back in full swing and organizers are hoping young athletes from the Sault will take part in the district qualifying event, set to take place in Sudbury on June 24.

Sault athletes have competed in the program for decades, Legion Branch 25 in Sault Ste. Marie said in a news release.

In recent years, however, participation has waned. Organizers are hoping to change that.

Competition at the district level is open to any athlete in the following age groups:

  1. U18 (17 and under): Born in 2006 or later
  2. U16 (15 and under): Born in 2008 or later
  3. U14 (13 and under): Born in 2010 or later
  4. U12 (11 and under): Born in 2012 or later

Any athlete is eligible to compete in the meet. There are no pre-qualifying requirements.

Note: Only U18 and U16 athletes are eligible for selection to the District H team that will compete in the Ontario provincial meet.

Entry fees of $5 per event are due with registration at the Legion office before the event, or when registering at the track to get your competition number.

Each athlete may enter up to four individual events.

(There will be no refunds or scratches. You are asked to make cheques payable to District "H" Track & Field.)

Athletes must provide their own transportation to Sudbury. While the local branch is unable to provide funding for travel, it says it will pay/reimburse registration fees.

You may also register in person or over the phone at the local Legion office currently located downstairs at the Marconi Club. Call 705-945-8721 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily or contact Mike McWatters by calling or texting 705-297-6019.

For the entry form to enter as part of the Br. 25 Sault Ste. Marie team, including waiver forms and photo permission, click here. Entry deadline is Monday, June 19 at 10 p.m.

Athletes must pick up their competition numbers by 9:30 a.m. the morning of June 24 at the Laurentian University Track Complex and are to be in the stands for opening ceremonies by 9:45 a.m.
