One year ago, our community lost a great force and a bright spirit when Gloria Fischer left us on July 26, 2016. Serving as the clerk of the Village of Hilton Beach for 30 years, Gloria became the heart and driving force of the community. She was also an extraordinary friend, mentor and role model to countless people over the years.
Gloria worked tirelessly to modernize and expand the services of the community, with a focus on youth, seniors and those with disabilities. The youth of the community were especially close to her heart. Playgrounds, recreational facilities and even a skatepark (over a decade before the Sault got one - she was quite proud of that) were high on her list of priorities. Gloria gave dozens of young people their first work experience, providing valuable guidance and mentorship, often for years after. She kept in touch with many of them as they grew up and followed their path to success that perhaps sprouted from that early experience and encouragement from Gloria.
Gloria's generosity and selflessness were immeasurable. Whether through a kind act, some encouraging words, a charitable donation, or her time, Gloria gave everything she had to her community - figuratively and literally.
Gloria saw far more than her share of adversity in her life, but through all of it she remained positive. She could find good in everything and bring out good in everyone. She would never let the occasional "oh shit moment" get her down. Even as she faced her final obstacle, she did it with a smile on her face, a great sarcastic sense of humour, and a lifetime's worth of perseverance and purpose. When her family and friends visited her at ARCH, she would always ask how they are and if she could do anything for them. Gloria remained selfless right to the end, even in her own greatest time of need.
Gloria's examples of service, kindness, respect, generosity and loyalty have impacted countless people in this community and beyond. Those whom she counted as a friend were humbled and honoured to know such a kind, brilliant, funny and extraordinary woman. The lasting effects of her invaluable mentorship with dozens of young people over the years, in particular, contributes to a lasting legacy that few can hope to achieve.
Fondly remembered.
Never forgotten.
